On 1 July 1906 Adolf Schmidt founded Adolf Schmidt Metallwaren- und Holzschraubfabrik and opened up shop with a handful of employees at the company headquarters at Adlerstraße 9 in Wuppertal. The company’s first products included all types of metal goods, all types of wood screws, and chains and fittings.
After the death of Adolf Schmidt in 1951 the business originally founded as an individual company was converted to a partnership and operated by his wife Marie and son Kurt and his wife Ms Hildegard.
Like many others, the company benefited from the economic wonder of the 1950s and expanded operations to include as many as sixty employees.
Since 1989 their son Stefan Schmidt has also worked for the company. The great grandson of the company founder has led the Wuppertal company together with his father, Hans Schmidt, since 1999.
